As reported on major Sydney news this morning - Ashlar's clubhouse is no more.
Originally - Medallist were looking to complete a land swap with Ashlar GC for the Stonecutters Ridge GC - providing Stonecutters with a ready membership base and greatly improving the facilities available for Ashlar members. Talks stalled earlier in the year and the downturn in the economy lead to the abandonment of talks.
I know a few members at Ashlar and the word was that the club was not doing so great financially - they were still solvent - but membership numbers weren't fabulous (mind you - that's been the case at most Sydney golf clubs in the last 5 years).
The fire at Ashlar must obviously raise the suspicions of the authorities (the first thoughts that came to my mind were "insurance job") but I can't imagine any of the officers at Ashlar GC condoning that sort of behaviour. Perhaps a member thought they were doing the club a favour? Or neighbourhood hooligans out of control?
Will be interesting to see how the investigation unfolds
